Happy Family : Prince George, duke of York with Pss Mary, duchess of York and firstborn son, Prince Edward.

Wow they do almost look like a happy family.

Unlike his gentle cousin Nicholas, George V was a very gruff man. I think he resented that he had to leave the navy as a young man to step into his deceased elder brother’s shoes as Duke of York. He was notorious for being strict with his sons and once said “My father was afraid of his mother, I was afraid of my father, and I’ll be damned if my children aren’t afraid of me.” Nicholas, on the other hand, adored his wife and children (in some ways, to his and Russia’s detriment) and always made time for his family.
The whole family looks happy to be together here, whereas in George and May’s photo, the only one who looks remotely comfortable is the dog.
